You have just discovered that the money you have been giving to your church is being used to support those engaging in terrorism – What do you do?
Silly question? Surely that is so far beyond the realm of possibility that it would be fruitless to explore.
IT HAPPENED – Okay, some flaky organization like Scientology or the Sacred Mushroom of the Cross did something stupid, you say. They are as far away from me and my faith as you can get.
I am not talking about Scientology, or Rosicrucianism, or Unity Village, — I am talking about the United Methodist Church.
Mark Tooley, member of the United Methodist Church, was confronted with this very dilemma when he discovered that the General Board of Global Ministries for the UMC was directing money given to support missions, to far-left political action groups – to Marxists, in guerrilla insurgents, to the re-education camps of totalitarian regimes, to the Palestinian Liberation Organization.
Pretty scary, huh? It gets worse. United Methodist Church resources were being used to promote abortion, homosexuality, and to criticize belief in the Deity of Jesus Christ and the authority of Bible.
But, there is good news. These things were happening not because it was the will of grassroots Methodists but because of entrenched Bureaucracy. And, for the last two decades Methodists have made great strides toward taking back the United Methodist Church.
Mark Tooley tells the story in his book
Taking Back the United Methodist Church. It is fascinating reading for anyone, but crucial for members of the United Methodist Church and evangelical leaders of any denomination.
I encourage you to read the book and to pray for our friends and family members in the UMC. May they be successful in Taking Back the United Methodist Church.
