John Cornyn And The Art Of The Half Jest

John Cornyn @ RPTI was invited to attend the Republican Party of Texas Convention held last week in Houston. I was offered full media credentials to “blog the convention.” It would have been fun, but I didn’t have the time and energy to participate right now.

Although I could not personally attend, I have enjoyed reading what others have had to say. It seems that a video clip that was shown at the convention has prompted The Left to really get their panties in a bunch. They are cringing in horror about the Big John video put together by Senator John Cornyn’s staff to introduce him at the convention. It would seem that just like public policy, the left just doesn’t get it. The video was obviously what my dad used to call “a half jest.” For him, a half jest was something that sent a serious message but that was framed in a way that is sufficiently over the top so as to bring a smile to your face. Not humorous, but almost humorous — a half jest.

As a “half jest” this Cornyn video is brilliant. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Why Good Teachers Are Confessional

I have never met Ralph Wood, but I would like to. He is Professor of Theology and Literature at Baylor University. Theology and Literature — having taught both of them myself I resonate a great deal with the essays, collections, and resources on his website.

I think that he and I would probably have some significant differences in theology, but I think that would make having tea with him just that much more interesting.

I plan on interacting with some of his ideas here on my blog in the near future, but for now I leave you with a point drawn from a presentation he made at Baylor University on March 27, 2003 at the Some Marks of Excellence in Teaching Leadership Development Seminar.

Why good teachers are gladly and deliberately confessional

a. Because all great texts and works and ideas are out to win us over, to convert us

b. Because of the Christian conviction that there is no full understanding without first believing: Credo ut intelligam: “I believe in order to understand” (St. Augustine, via Isaiah 7:9 Septuagint). Since all truth is rooted in the triune God, it is encountered only as God himself is encountered: in trust and obedience and reverence.

I’m Glad I’m A Texan, Instead

Bouncin' BonanzaWow, it’s been a long time since I watched the first Indiana Jones movie at a drive-in movie theater in Joplin, MO. In preparation for the new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull we have been re-watching the old Indiana Jones movies. While watching one this week, six-year old Tessa leaned over and said to Susan, “I’m glad I’m not a Nazi, I’m glad I’m a Texan, instead.”

Tessa, I am also glad that you are not a Nazi — that you are a Texan, instead.

Why Did Jesus Die In Texas?

While being put to bed by my wife, my daughter who was four at the time, began her regular nightly practice of asking theological questions. My son did this when he was that age, because he learned that it was a good way to milk extra minutes before having to go to sleep. Our daughter seemed to do this out of genuine interest, but given the depravity of man, who knows.

“Mom, why did Jesus die in Texas.”

“Baby, he didn’t die in Texas. Why would you think that?”

Texas Is Voting

I voted today. The Texas primary isn’t until Tuesday, March 4 but we have early voting. I was shocked at how many people were there. It wasn’t even election day but people were lined up almost out the doors to vote early.

I voted for the person who I thought would make the best President. He is also the only person who could answer “yes” to all the questions on the following voter’s guide.
