Will Rogers – select quotes

A man only learns in two ways, one by reading, and the other by association with smarter people.

Ancient Rome declined because it had a Senate, now what’s going to happen to us with both a House and a Senate?

Even if you’re on the right road, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

I don’t make jokes, I just watch the government and report the facts.

Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.

There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.

Wanted . . . Men!

A society in South Africa once wrote to David Livingston: “Have you found a good road to where you are?  If so, we want tot know how to send other men to join you.”

Livingston replied: “If you have men who will come only if they know there is a good road, I don’t want them.  I want men who will come if there is no road at all.”

Death – What is on the other side?

I was away last week for my mother’s funeral so my work email has stacked up a bit.  While sorting through my email and trying to clean out some old stuff I came across the following story which someone had sent to me some time ago.  It made me think of the beautiful passage of comfort found in John 14 so I share it with you here.

~DEATH~

A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to

Leave the examination room and said,

‘Doctor, I am afraid to die.

Tell me what lies on the other side.’

Very quietly, the doctor said, ‘I don’t know.’

‘You don’t know? You, a Christian man,

Do not know what is on the other side?’

The doctor was holding the handle of the door;

On the other side came a sound of scratching and whining,

And as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room

And leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.

Turning to the patient, the doctor said,

‘Did you notice my dog?

He’s never been in this room before.

He didn’t know what was inside.

He knew nothing except that his master was here,

And when the door opened, he sprang in without fear.

I know little of what is on the other side of death,

But I do know one thing…

I know my Master is there and that is enough.’

The Innocent Book Thief

Pope Innocent XAnatole France once said that it was not wise to lend books because no one ever returned them. He went on to say that the only books he had in his library were the books lent to him by others.

Little Blue Plug, Not Little Brown Jug

Little Blue PlugI keep a little blue plug on my desk. It is there as a reminder to me not to do something stupid. Not that it really works (as is evidenced by me catching a scorpion Sunday night and bringing it into a colleagues office as a gift), but that is the intention nonetheless. Why a little blue plug? It is a Quickport Cat5e Jack for a wall outlet into which a network cable was inserted for a software training class to have internet access. I got up to get coffee, wasn’t watching where my feet were going, [Read more…]

Killing Them With Kindness

Death by Oyster

Whew. You made it through another Father’s Day without giving your dad a necktie. Congratulations. It isn’t always easy to find the right gift for Dad, or Mom, or anyone else. Finding the right “Thank You” gift that genuinely expresses your appreciation can also be quite difficult. Consider this story of gift giving gone bad.

In the early part of the century Arthur Hungerford Pollen invented a superior gunnery control system for the British navy. he did not get the Royal Navy to use his system until he had won over Frederick C. Ogilvy, one of the most respected gunnery officers in the navy. Pollen, wanting to express his thanks, sent Ogilvy a basket of oysters. Unfortunately, the oysters were tainted. Ogilvy died a few weeks later. (Source: Casanova Was A Book Lover)

I guess he should have sent him a necktie, instead.

When Did You Become a Writer?

Gabriel the writer

Over the last few weeks I have had several conversations with people about becoming a writer. Well, not so much about becoming a writer as thinking of oneself as a writer. Many of you are writers, so I ask you, “When did you begin to think of yourself as a writer? When did writer become part of your self-description?”

For me the transition to thinking of myself as a writer took place in by early teen years. [Read more…]
