Music – select quotes

In the 25 years of working with the brain, I still cannot affect a person’s state of mind the way one simple song can.
~ Dr. Richard Pellegrino (neurologist)

I don’t sing because I am happy—I am happy because I sing.
~ William James

Music is a higher revelation than philosopy.
~ Ludwig van Beethoven, in a letter to Bettina von Arnim, 1810

Art and Artists – select quotes

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.
~ Scott Adams

A successful work of art is not one which resolves contradictions in a spurious harmony, but one which expresses the idea of harmony negatively by embodying the contradictions, pure and uncompromised, in its innermost structure.
~ Theodore Adorno

It is curious that money, which is the most valuable thing in life, excepis excipiendis, should be the most fatal corrupter of music, literature, painting and all the arts. As soon as any art is pursued with a view of money, then farewell, in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred, all hope of genuine good work.
~ Samuel Butler

A picture is a poem without words.
~ Confucius

To me it seems as if God conceived the world, that was poetry; he formed it, and that was sculpture; He colored it, and that was painting; He peopled it with living beings, and that was the grand, divine, eternal drama.
~ Charlotte Cushman

Nature is the Art of God.
~ Dante Alighieri in Monarchy

Art is a quest for the useless.
~ Gustave Flaubert

The artist is not a different kind of person, but each one of us is a different kind of artist.
~ Eric Gill

Creativity arises out of the tension between spontaneity and limitations, the latter (like the river banks) forcing the spontaneity into the various forms which are essential to the work of art or poem.
~ Rollo May

The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.
~ Michelangelo

Art is the great stimulus to life.
~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Art is more godlike than science. Science discovers; art creates.
~ John Opie

Art is a lie that makes us realize truth.
~ Pablo Picasso

Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable.
~ George Bernard Shaw

Art is like a border of flowers along the course of civilization.
~ Lincoln Steffens

But then no artist is normal; if he were, he wouldn’t be an artist. Normal men don’t create works of art. They eat, sleep, hold down routine jobs, and die. You are hypersensitive to life and nature; that’s why you are able to interpret for the rest of us. But if you are not careful, that very hypersensitiveness will lead you to your destruction. The strain of it breaks every artist in time.
~ Irving Stone, in Lust for Life

Art is not pleasure, or an amusement; art is a great matter.
~ Leo Tolstoy, in What Is Art?

Nancy Spiegelberg – select quotes

Lord, I crawled across the barrenness to you with my empty cup uncertain in asking any small drop of refreshment. If only I had known you better I’d have come running with a bucket.

Pop Quiz

Trivia question — The band Kansas had a big 1976 hit “Carry On Wayward Son”, but they didn’t carry on past 1983 (at least without reformulating the team).  Do you know why Kansas hit the wall, couldn’t hold on, and at the point of know return broke up the band in 1983 to become dust in the wind?

Win A Recording Contract

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Popstation. All opinions are 100% mine.

So you think you can dance sing?  If you have musical talent you will want to be sure to check out the contest over at Popstation.   What is PopStation?  Well, it’s kind of like American Idol, … but it’s conducted on the internet.

Sign up — it’s free — then leverage your talent for a chance to win an Album Deal.  The person winning “The BIG Deal” and “The Artist Formerly Known As You” will be awarded an all expenses paid three night stay in NYC. Luxury car service will shuttle the winner back-and-forth from a “ridiculously hip” hotel to a professional recording studio where they will spend two days recording their very own album with the help of a professional production team.

Not too bad…

So, head on over to the practice rooms; select a song from a variety of musical genres (Hip Hop, R&B, Country, Pop, Rock, Latino, and Inspirational); use the lyric sheets, backing tracks, videos, song demos and other tools found in the practice room to make the song your own; use the tools provided to record and upload your recording; then get your friends to check it out and vote for you.

Sounds like lots of fun to me. Unfortunately I can’t sing a lick so my level of participation will be limited to voting for my friends. So, if you enter the contest be sure to let me know so I can check out your recording and vote for you.
