Favorite Movies

We watch lots of movies in our family.  Entertainment is secondary to engaging the ideas embedded in the movies.  I find that for weeks following a movie my conversation with wife and kids will revisit the themes and worldviews represented in the production.

We recently switched back to Netflix from Blockbuster and I have gone through the process of rating movies I have seen in order for the interface to be able to make recommendations to me.  During this process, it has been interesting for me to identify some old favorites.  I share a few here, in no particular order.

  • Martin Luther (1953)
  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
  • The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
  • The Last of the Mohicans
  • The Patriot
  • The Quiet Man
  • Henry V
  • The Sound of Music
  • Braveheart
  • Groundhog Day
  • Sergeant York
  • Return To Me

Alfred Hitchcock – select quotes

I never said that actors were cattle. What I said was that actors should be treated as cattle.

This paperback is very interesting, but I find it will never replace a hardcover book – it makes a very poor doorstop.

Seeing a murder on television, can help work off one’s antagonisms. And if you haven’t any antagonisms, the commercials will give you some.

The Spiderwick Chronicles

The Spiderwick Chronicles is  a cute movie that I enjoyed watching with the kids.  However, when they say that The Spiderwick Chronicles is rated PG, they should probably say PG-13.  It wasn’t loaded up with trash talking teens  and innuendo such as is common in many of today’s tween movies, but it has some pretty scary looking critters in it and some uncomfortable themes.  I don’t think my ten-year old was looking forward to going to bed after watching the movie.

I recommend the movie to you as fun and creative.  However, [Read more…]

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Crystal Skull and Indian Jones

We finally got around to taking the family to see the new Indiana Jones movie. It was in many ways what I was expecting. There was the cast of characters with whom we were familiar, chase scenes, critters to make you squirm (like the previous snakes and rats and roaches), exotic locations, humor, and the sense that you are engaging in entertainment that is not as mindless as most.

But there were some things that were NOT what I was expecting. Previous episodes were written in the vein of what you might hear from callers into Michael Medved’s radio talk show when he hosts his weekly Conspiracy Day. However, [Read more…]

Are Professors Being Expelled

Expelled Dembski“Professors aren’t being fired because they support intelligent design, they are being fired for lots of other reasons and then they have to justify their firing to other people and say it was because they advocated ID, rather than admit they were in some other way inadequate.”

That is what I was recently told by a cheeky fellow who was trying to cast an aura of confidence and disdain.

You Are My Destiny

When it comes to girls, every teenage boy needs a little helpful advice from someone who as already walked that path. I laugh just thinking of the scene from “Back To The Future” where George McFly, taking the advice of Marty, states his love for Lorraine. With the pathos of a suitor reading his lines from a notebook, George declares, “You are my density!” What? He had the letters in the wrong order, he meant to say “destiny”.

Like a teenage boy needing advice on girls from someone who has been there, so every traveler needs guidance from someone who has been there. If you get that advice from the wrong place or get the details skewed you can end up with density rather than at your destiny. That is where Destinia comes in.

Destinia is a Spanish online travel agency that is expanding into the English language market. As such, it not as well known as some of those who have been operating in the English market for awhile. But, it will be soon and it will be exciting to see the new ideas and opportunities that Destinia introduces in English market.

Before you take your next trip, check out possible hotels and flight arrangements with Destinia, as well as information on show tickets and more. If you don’t, you may very well end up in density rather than at your destiny.

Our Young Indiana Jones

Daniel & Indy My wife, Susan, wrote the following:

* * *

This was the year of Indiana Jones for our son, Daniel, who recently celebrated his 4th birthday. While my search for Indiana Jones themed party plates, cups and other Indy birthday paraphernalia turned futile (all the party stores were expecting shipments next week) I did manage to find the requested toys. There is the Indiana Jones Lego set which took my engineering challenged brain a mere hour to assemble. There is the action figure, complete with a press button which repeats bits of dialog from the movies. And of course where would an aspiring four year old Indiana Jones be without a genuine whip? The model I found is undeniably cool – looks authentic but is still soft and cushy and best of all, it makes genuine whip sounds followed by a bit of the Indiana Jones theme music. Cool huh?

We are already starting to regret the whip. On the first day [Read more…]
