Tony Dungy – "You Can Do It!"

I am a big fan of Tony Dungy. He is at the top of his field, is the first coach of African-American descent to win a Super Bowl, writes and speaks broadly, is outspoken about his Christian faith, and is concerned to improve the lives of others.

In the video below, Tony Dungy talks with Russ Mitchell about his new book for kids You Can Do It !

What Is Happiness?

Yesterday I had lunch with a friend at a Thai restaurant. He mentioned that he has family members who have been serving as missionaries in Hungary. It made me think of a poem I had read in Carl Sandburg’s Harvest Poems: 1910-1960. I shared the poem with him and he said he might agree if he could change the accordion for an acoustical guitar. Here it is for your consideration:

Happiness

I asked professors who teach the meaning of life to tell me what is happiness.
And I went to famous executives who boss the work of thousands of men.
They all shook their heads and gave me a smile as though I was trying to fool them.
And then one Sunday afternoon I wandered out along the Desplaines river.
And I saw a crowd of Hungarians under the trees with their women and children and a keg of beer and an accordion.

So I guess happiness is having women, children, beer and an accordion (or an acoustical guitar).

Why Did Jesus Die In Texas?

While being put to bed by my wife, my daughter who was four at the time, began her regular nightly practice of asking theological questions. My son did this when he was that age, because he learned that it was a good way to milk extra minutes before having to go to sleep. Our daughter seemed to do this out of genuine interest, but given the depravity of man, who knows.

“Mom, why did Jesus die in Texas.”

“Baby, he didn’t die in Texas. Why would you think that?”

Picher, Oklahoma – Cardin Oklahoma

If I am going to share with my kids the area where I spent my teenage years, I am going to have to do it right away because, it will all be gone soon. It sounds strange to say that a whole town, the school, the churches, the businesses will be gone . . . but they will. [Read more…]

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso – Select Quotes

Academic training in beauty is a sham.

It takes a very long time to become young.

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.
