Changing Chairs – Changing The World

Sometimes I share the following story with those who are growing frustrated with what is happening in their organization.

Back in the early 90’s I worked in an office setting. I hated my chair. So, every time one of my co-workers would resign, retire, or be promoted out of the office, I would check their chair to see if it was better than mine. If the chair of the departing person was better than mine, I would exchange them while the position was vacant. After a couple of years I had the best chair in the organization.

Sometimes the best way to deal with organizational frustration is to wait it out. Gradually, as the office dynamic changes, you will be able to make small changes that lead the organization in the direction you think it should go. And, if you wait out enough people, you may come to think of the office which is currently frustrating you as the best seat in the house.
