One Sunday sometime back in the 1970’s, our pastor, who was also my dad, stood in the pulpit and poured his heart out to God in a passionate prayer. He concluded his prayer, and even before those gathered for worship could open their eyes, a deep resonant voice came over the speaker system, “10-4 good buddy.”
It is true that the Bible refers to Abraham as a friend of God, but none of those assembled were quite prepared for God to address the preacher as “good buddy” over the church audio speaker system.
Despite eveyone’s being temporarily taken aback by the phenomenon, it didn’t take long for people to recover and realize that it was bleedover from a CB radio transmission of a trucker going down the highway. At least, I think it was . . . . . . . . .
Adrian Rogers was asked back in 1980 why he was not running for a second term as president of the SBC. Rogers responded that God had told him not to. The reporter then asked “Did God speak to you in an audible voice?” to which Rogers answered “No, It was louder than that!”
